We are thrilled to announce that Wheel Restore has won the prestigious DIRA (Danish Industrial Robotic Association) Technology Award 2024 for our innovative Wheel Painting Machine!
On Thursday, May 30, 2024, during the DIRA Business and ROBOTBRAG 2024 event in Odense, Denmark, we were honored to be recognized for our cutting-edge technology in front of industry leaders and enthusiasts.
Our Wheel Painting Machine stood out among the three finalists for its ability to revolutionize the wheel refurbishing process. This compact, user-friendly machine, occupying just 1×1 meter of space, allows even the smallest tire shops to refurbish used rims from start to finish.
The fully automatic solution is designed to ensure that used rims can be recycled instead of being discarded, utilizing a combination of well-known industrial automation technologies. Our machine integrates an iPC, PLC, servo motors, a frequency converter, and a cobot. This powerful combination allows the Wheel Painting Machine to preheat, prime, paint, and lacquer used rims on both sides in a single operation, with surface treatment curing facilitated by IR and UV lamps.
Why We Won
The jury’s praise for our technology was immensely gratifying:
“Wheel Restore has come a long way, and the process from idea to realization is impressive. Technologically, they have managed to condense well-known technologies into a compact and enclosed solution that makes a difference without polluting the surroundings during the process. It’s very well thought out and fits perfectly with the increasing focus on recycling, remanufacturing, and sustainability in general.”
The jury highlighted the significant impact of our machine on the entire supply chain, particularly its role in reducing the CO2 footprint associated with aluminum production. By remanufacturing damaged aluminum rims that would typically be discarded, our machine champions a clear, sustainable mission. Combining existing technologies to address a real-world challenge, our solution is also transforming an industry that has yet to fully embrace automation.
Celebrating a Strong Field of Nominees
We were honored to compete alongside two other remarkable technologies: Sentinus, the autonomous underwater inspection robot from Blue Atlas Robotics, and FASTSEWN, a technology for automating sewing processes from Mikkelsen Innovation ApS.
The jury, comprising Lasse Kieffer from Robot Valley Capital, John Christiansen, Head of R&D Automation at LEGO, Jens Johansen, Portfolio Customer Manager at EIFO, and Marianne Fajstrup, editor and tech journalist from Ingeniøren, expressed great enthusiasm for all the nominees. They emphasized the high quality and potential of each technology, making their decision incredibly challenging.
Inspiring Innovation in Robotics and Automation
The DIRA Technology Award aims to raise awareness of new technological opportunities and inspire the robotics and automation industry to develop innovative products. Recognitions like this highlight the significant impact technology can have on resource conservation and waste reduction, particularly in industries like ours. Our Wheel Painting Machine exemplifies how advanced automation can refurbish and recycle alloy wheels, minimizing waste and reducing the environmental footprint of aluminum production.
We are proud that our Wheel Painting Machine has been recognized as a part of this mission, and we look forward to continuing to drive innovation and sustainability in our field.
Thank you to DIRA and the esteemed jury for this incredible honor. Congratulations to all the nominees for their outstanding contributions to technology and innovation.
