How to Repair Diamond Cut Wheels – The Diamond Cut Alloy Wheel Repair Process Explained

By WheelRestore on May 21, 2026

Diamond cut alloy wheels give modern cars a premium OEM finish, but they are also easily damaged by curb rash, scratches, corrosion, and peeling lacquer. Many vehicle owners think damaged wheels need replacement — but in most cases, they can be professionally repaired and refurbished.

Using modern CNC wheel repair technology, workshops can restore diamond cut alloy wheels back to a factory-style finish quickly and accurately. Instead of replacing expensive wheels, the damaged surface is machined, refinished, and protected using specialized wheel repair equipment.

In this guide, we explain how the diamond cut wheel repair process works and how professionals restore damaged alloy wheels to an OEM-quality finish.

What Are Diamond Cut Alloy Wheels?

Diamond cut wheels are different from normal painted alloy wheels.

After the wheel is painted, a CNC lathe cuts a thin layer from the surface of the wheel. This creates the bright metallic finish that diamond cut wheels are known for. The wheel then gets a clear coat to protect the metal from water, dirt, and corrosion.

Because the metal surface sits under a thin clear coat, diamond cut wheels can damage more easily than fully painted wheels. Small stone chips or scratches can let moisture get under the lacquer. Over time, this causes corrosion and peeling. This is why many drivers look for ways to repair diamond cut alloy wheels instead of replacing them.

Can Diamond Cut Wheels Be Repaired?

Yes. In most cases, diamond cut alloy wheels can be repaired and refurbished.

Professional wheel repair shops use CNC wheel machines to remove damage from the wheel surface and restore the original finish. This process can often repair:

  • Curb rash
  • Scratches
  • Corrosion
  • Oxidation
  • Peeling lacquer
  • Surface damage

Many dealerships, tire shops, body shops, and EV service centers now refurbish diamond cut wheels instead of replacing them. Repairing the wheel usually costs much less than buying a new OEM wheel.

The Diamond Cut Wheel Repair Process

Professional diamond cut wheel repair follows several important steps. Here is the process that we use when repairing Diamond Cut wheels.

1. Wheel inspection and preparation

The repair process starts with a thorough inspection of the wheel. The technician checks the alloy wheel for cracks, bends, and other signs of heavy damage to determine the best repair method.

If the wheel is suitable for diamond cut refurbishment, it is carefully cleaned and prepared for repair. Proper preparation is an important step, as it helps ensure a smooth surface and a high-quality final finish.

2. Wheel blasting

The wheel surface is blasted using a purpose-built Wheel Blasting Machine (WM750) to remove:

  • Old lacquer
  • Corrosion
  • Dirt
  • Paint residue

This step helps remove scratches and corrosion from the diamond cut alloy wheel. It also creates a clean surface before machining starts.

3. Laser scanning

The WR-DCM3 Diamond Cut Machine uses laser scanning technology to measure the wheel shape before cutting begins. The laser creates a digital profile of the wheel surface. This helps the machine follow the original wheel design during cutting.

Using laser scanning improves:

  • Accuracy
  • Finish quality
  • Repair speed
  • Consistency

4. Spin and alignment test

Before cutting, the machine checks that the wheel spins correctly and sits in the right position.

This step is important, because it is here you detect any imperfections that could affect the final finish. It ensures that you end up with a smooth and even finish after cutting.

5. Diamond cutting

This is the main part of the repair process.

The wheel goes into the WR-DCM3 Diamond Cutting Machine. A cutting tool removes a very thin layer from the wheel surface revealing a bright metallic surface. This removes scratches, curb rash, and corrosion while restoring the original diamond cut finish.

This is how professionals repair diamond cut alloy wheels and bring them back to a factory-style look.

6. Freshly cut surface

After cutting the surface, the wheel reveals a clean, sharp diamond cut finish, and a like-new appearance.

7. Clear coat application

After cutting, the wheel needs protection.

We use the Fully Automated Wheel Painting Machine (WM600) to apply a new clear coat over the freshly cut metal surface. This protects the wheel against corrosion and weather damage.

8. Curing

To harden the clear coat and make the finish durable, we use the integrated UV curing lamp in the Wheel Painting Robot.

The UV makes sure the surface gets durable enough for daily driving.

How Long Does It Take to Repair Diamond Cut Wheels?

Repair times depend on the level of damage and the equipment being used.

Modern wheel repair systems make the process much faster than before. Many professional workshops can complete a diamond cut alloy wheel refurbishment within a few hours.

Some workshops repair multiple wheels every day using automated blasting, cutting, painting, and curing systems.

How Many Times Can Diamond Cut Wheels Be Repaired?

Every time a wheel gets diamond cut, the machine removes a small amount of metal from the surface.

Because of this, there is a limit to how many times a wheel can be repaired. The exact number depends on:

  • Wheel design
  • Wheel thickness
  • Previous repairs
  • Manufacturer limits

Many wheels can safely be refurbished more than once when repaired correctly.

Advanced Wheel Repair Technology

At Wheel Restore, we build advanced and purpose-built wheel repair machines and equipment for professional alloy wheel refurbishment.

For Diamond Cut repairs you essentially only need three machines to restore wheels to OEM-quality finish:

  • WM750 – Wheel Blasting Machine
  • WR-DCM3 – Diamond Cut Machine
  • WM600 – Wheel Painting Robot

Repair – Do Not Replace

Damaged diamond cut alloy wheels do not always need replacement. Modern wheel repair technology makes it possible to repair scratches, curb rash, and corrosion while restoring the original factory finish.

For many workshops and vehicle owners, diamond cut wheel refurbishment is now the smarter and more cost-effective solution, and many dealerships are also now bringing wheel repair in-house, because they really see the major benefits that comes with it.
