From one repair to a repeatable process

As Tesla keeps dominating the electric vehicle scene, we’re seeing more Model 3s, Ys, and S cars coming into workshops with a common issue—damaged alloy wheels. Those eye-catching turbine-style designs and sleek matte finishes look great, but they’re also pretty vulnerable to curb damage and cosmetic wear.

The Viper H3117f matte black turbine wheel, which you can find on the Model Y, is a great example. Since it’s so popular, repair shops really need to know how to fix it up right.

In this situation, we used the WM600 automatic wheel painting machine to not only get a perfect repair but also to save the whole process in the system’s memory. This means you can easily get the same great results whenever that wheel comes back to your workshop.

Why Tesla’s matte black turbine wheels demand precision repair

One of the most commonly damaged and visually striking wheels in Tesla’s lineup is the Viper H3117f matte black turbine design. It looks amazing on the road, but that matte finish makes it tricky to repair.

Matte finishes allow for no room for mistakes; any deviation in spray angle, layer thickness, or curing duration will be apparent after completion. With the increasing popularity of Teslas, it is crucial to consistently restore wheels to meet owners’ high expectations.

Conventional repair techniques, such as manual spraying and masking, often lead to inconsistent results and require significant skill. To meet the rising demands of EV customers, particularly Tesla owners, repair shops must adopt more efficient and reliable methods.

Restoring the tesla turbine alloy with the WM600

So, we used the WM600 Wheel Painting Machine to get that damaged wheel back to its original color and specifications. Our technician popped it on the machine and picked the right painting mode right from the touchscreen.

After that, everything was pretty much hands-off. The robot took over, applying primer, basecoat, and clearcoat using either a spray gun or an upside-down aerosol, depending on how we wanted it to look. The wheel spun around while the paint went on, making sure it got an even coat all over, both on the face and the inner barrel.

The machine features an integrated curing system that adjusts infrared and ultraviolet drying according to the selected paint. Ultimately, it restored the Tesla turbine wheel to match the original in color, texture, and shine.

What happened next made this repair truly scalable

After completing the repair and restoring the wheel to its original matte black finish, we utilized the WM600’s Save-a-Wheel feature to document the entire process. In just ten seconds, we recorded details such as the paint system, spray time, curing cycle, and rotational speed for future reference.

If another Tesla Model Y with those same turbine wheels arrives at a repair shop next week—or even next year—the technicians won’t have to start from scratch. They can simply select the saved wheel profile, mount the wheel, and hit start.

Everything will be done exactly the same way as before, with no need to recalibrate, test, or make any manual adjustments.

The real value of a digital wheel library

The Save-a-Wheel function simplifies the process of transforming a successful repair into a repeatable procedure, regardless of the technician or location. Furthermore, this functionality is not limited to Tesla wheels; it can be utilized on any type of wheel.

Shops that regularly work on various wheel types can now ensure consistent high quality every time, without relying on a specific technician. Whether it’s a seasoned painter or someone just starting out, the machine handles the repair with precision for all wheel styles.

This significantly enhances productivity, reducing wheel restoration time from 30-45 minutes to under 15, while maintaining quality. Additionally, the wheel library ensures consistency across various locations, crucial for mobile alloy wheel repair services and chain operations.

Designed for EV repair standards and OEM accuracy

The automatic wheel painting robot isn’t just about automating the painting process; it’s designed to give you consistent results that meet or even beat OEM factory standards.

It works perfectly with our OEM Wheel Paint Mixing System, which has over 89 exact-match color formulas for the most popular alloys out there. So, whether it’s Tesla, or any other wheel, you can refinish them in-house with the right color, gloss, and durability—no need for a big paint booth.

Consistent Results, Every Time

In the case of the Tesla Turbine wheels, we managed to achieve a factory-quality finish in a controlled environment, with results that you can count on every time and built-in curing. Plus, we’ve saved that process, so it’s ready to go whenever we need it again.
